We were in Japan with a group of students in the summer of 1997. Hiro Sato San took some of his students yachting. As his boat could only hold two people at a time we watched and waved from the landing each time they disappeared around the bend. Hiro San would return alone a few minutes later to take another pair of students to the other side of the lake.
As the process was slow one I looked for other entertainment. With my camera in hand, I walked up the access road and saw what appeared to be the remains of shoes. In less than an hour I photographed 25 soles. Someone suggested they were "lost soles".
The images on this page are photos on canvas resembling
